St. Catherine of Siena
The history of the Missionary Station, St. Catherine of Siena Parish, could be traced back on February 14, 1993 when Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz, D.D., the Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan issued the decree stating the canonical establishment of the Chaplaincy of Villanueva, Bautista, Pangasinan. The combined land area of Primicias, Poponto, Artacho and Villanueva constitutes the territorial coverage of the Chaplaincy. The said enactment started the journey of this new ecclesial unit that bears the name, Chaplaincy of St. Catherine of Siena. It was entrusted to t he parish of St. John the Baptist. This is an agricultural area where transportation is quite difficult in some parts especially during rainy season. Due to lack of resources, poverty could be felt by the people. The population comprised mostly of farmers includes 5,000 Catholics who engaged themselves in agricultural works. The livelihood of the people was very much affected by constant calamities like strong typhoons which damaged all agricultural products. This resulted in the scarcity of food and other basic needs of the people. Since its foundation, the priest assigned celebrated mass once a week or every Sunday and during fiesta and Misa de Gallo. Due to the absence of resident priest, the people’s faith gradually diminished which caused many of them to transfer in other religions or sects.
With the condition mentioned above, the newly-appointed Archbishop Socrates Villegas, invited the Rogationists of the Heart of Jesus Congregation to take over the chaplaincy. The former Major Superior, Fr. Bruno Rampazzo, RCJ visited the place and talked to the people. After study, the congregation accepted the proposal. It is to be noted that the Chaplaincy has zero balance status as far as financial condition is concerned when entrusted to the Rogationist.
On June 24, 2010 the official letter was sent by the former Superior General, Fr. Giorgio Nalin, RCJ, considered the invitation of Archbishop Socrates Villegas and has authorized him to start the Rogationists presence in Villanueva, Bautista, Pangasinan. The missionary activity of the Rogationists started on July 1, 2010 with Fr. Niptale Frogosa, RCJ as nominated Chaplain of St. Catherine of Siena together with Rev. Ricardo Caperina, RCJ as his collaborator. The installation of Fr. Niptale as the official Chaplain of St. Catherine of Siena was held on September 12, 2010 by His Excellency Archbishop Socrates Villegas, D.D., Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan. After six months, the chaplaincy was elevated into a parish. The Decree Establishing the Parish of St. Catherine of Siena with Pastoral Center in Villanueva, Bautista, Pangasinan was issued by the good Archbishop on April 24, 2011. With this decree, the Archbishop detached from the parish of St. John the Baptist, Bautista, Pangasinan barangays Villanueva, Poponto, Artacho, Primicias and Pogo and Sitios Cuarenta and Namualan of barangay Diaz, and barangay Pantol and Palisoc from the Parish of St. Vincent Ferrer, Bayambang, Pangasinan and with their territory establish a Parish under the patronage of St. Catherine of Siena. The new parish will be part of the Vicariate of Our lady, Queen of Peace. On the same occasion, the installation of the first parish priest, Fr. Nip Frogosa was done.
